PhD project: The interaction between DNA replication and DNA mismatch repair
This project will address the molecular mechanisms by which the DNA replication and DNA mismatch repair machinery interact with one another. In particular you will study how the DNA replication proteins are recruited to the site of repair and directed by the DNA mismatch repair proteins to fill in a large (~1000 base pair) single stranded gap in the DNA. You will study these interactions using different approaches, including cryo-electron microscopy and single molecule light microscopy methods. In addition you will be trained in protein purification and biochemical characterization as well as conventional molecular biology methods (cloning, mutagenesis etc).
You will be immersed in an international, multidisciplinary training environment in fundamental life sciences and obtain insight into the role of basic chemical and physical principles underlying molecular steps in complex yet integrated molecular processes. As the research relies on cutting-edge technologies, development of new approaches will be an integral part of your project. Because of the close collaboration between academia and industry, you will furthermore learn how technology development drives innovation in research and how basic research questions can drive innovative technology into marketplace developments.
This project will be hosted at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC, Leiden, the Netherlands), with long and short training visits to other consortium partners.
Qualifications and skills
We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a MSc (or equivalent degree that qualifies you for a PhD program) in Biochemistry, Structural Biology or closely related field, good command of English (IELTS grade min. 6.5, or equivalent). We welcome applicants of all nationalities. Being able to present a certificate of good conduct is a condition for the appointment.
Terms of employment
You will receive a temporary position for 4 years. The gross monthly salary is €2266,- in the 1st year and increases to € 2903,- in the 4th year (scale OIO). The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC). Additionally, employment terms for Marie Curie projects (https://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/index_en.htm) apply for the first three years of employment.
